Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park – The Park of Tree-Climbing Lions
Tucked between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and the shimmering waters of Lake Manyara, this compact yet diverse park is one of Tanzania’s hidden gems. Covering about 330 km², nearly two-thirds of which is the alkaline Lake Manyara itself, the park offers breathtaking scenery and incredible wildlife experiences.
Wildlife Highlights
Lake Manyara is world-famous for its rare tree-climbing lions, often seen lounging on acacia branches. The park is also home to large herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, and a wide variety of antelopes. Troops of playful baboons, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, are a common and fascinating sight along the forested areas.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise
With over 400 bird species, the park is a haven for bird lovers. The lake attracts huge flocks of flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, and many migratory species, creating a colorful spectacle against the lake’s surface.
